I own a shot gun and a deer rifle. I enjoy hunting and getting out in the woods. I also see the purpose of owning a handgun for self-defense although guns in the home statistically have shown to be more of a danger to the residents of the home than to intruders. I personally do not feel the need for a handgun. AR-15 style assault rifles serve no purpose other than to kill people and to kill many people quickly particularly with large capacity magazines. I think we should ban the sale of assault rifles.

The recent shooter in Uvalde, Texas was clearly mentally deranged. But there was no history of mental health problems that would have flagged him as a threat to himself or to others. Consequently, a law limiting access to guns for people at risk would not have been useful in this instance. He was a lone shooter under the radar of mental health professionals and law enforcement. It appears that Texas needs to do more in identifying people at risk and keeping track of them. And this is a problem all over the country. Yes, we have a right to โ€œbear arms.โ€ But the types of arms people can own should be limited to hunting and self-defense. Letโ€™s get rid of access to assault guns. They have no place in a civilian environment where we have many at risk individuals, particularly teenagers with mental health problems.
