I watched in stunned disbelief as Marjorie Taylor Greene told an audience that the new House majority intended to audit the money and material being sent to Ukraine. Ignoring geopolitical history, she opined that the money would be better spent on domestic issues. She then compared the men, women, and children migrating across our southern border to the invading Russian army that is currently devastating Ukraine. At first, I thought even someone as intellectually limited as Ms. Taylor Greene couldn’t possibly believe the comparison was valid. After all, we haven’t heard of any bridges being destroyed by immigrants, and no attack on nuclear power plants have been in the news. No Venezuelans have annexed parts of Texas and Arizona, nor have any American citizens been kidnapped and transported to El Salvador. Well, Ron DeSantis did provide a model for that sort of thing, but the destination was Cape Cod.

So, given her observations and expertise, I wondered if Ms. Taylor Greene knew something I didn’t. Then I thought, not a chance. Whereas the Russians brought guns and armor across the border and routinely slaughtered noncombatants, Central American refugees brought only their dreams and what they could carry. Equating them with a brutal army intent on destroying a people and their culture betrays a remarkable detachment from reality and possible personality disorder. On the bright side, the next couple of years should provide endless material for op-ed pieces and opportunities for Democratic reminders: this is what you asked for.
