I’m appalled at CNN and St. Anselm’s College granting Donald Trump free airtime, treating him with all the courtesies of a normal presidential candidate. While an indictment looms for the his part in the January 6 insurrection, he has already given that insurrection his obvious endorsement. He did this at the Red Arrow dinner in Manchester, hugging one of the rioters and autographing her back pack. At his Waco Texas rally, he played videos of the riot on a big screen and called these criminals (many of them now convicted) “patriots.” Even more revealing has been his reaction to accusations of sexual abuse and, in the case of E. Jean Carroll, outright rape.
He clearly shows that he believes he did nothing wrong. To deny a rape charge by saying “she wouldn’t have been my first choice” or “she’s not my type” makes it clear that he still thinks his thuggish behavior toward women is just fine. He even brags about that behavior in the Access Hollywood tape. We’ll learn more from the special prosecutor and from the District Attorney in Atlanta, but meanwhile we have Trump’s voice recorded asking Brad Raffensperger, “just find me the 11,000, votes I need.” That alone should lead to a conviction. Trump’s own behavior already convicts him. Please, no free airtime for him at St Anselm’s. Let him spend his own money here if he wishes. Let him join the debates with other Republican primary candidates.
