Monday’s snow and an expected return of snow showers through midweek is ironic, considering how little snow we got this winter, but it’s far from a late-season record.

In fact, just last year it snowed in Concord on April 8 and 9 – and later that same week, it hit 74 degrees at Concord Airport, so even the sudden switch from last week’s warmth isn’t unusual.

About 2 inches fell in Concord on Monday by 6 p.m. according to AccuWeather, starting during the morning rush hour, leading to a number of minor highway accidents around the state.

The storm left New England by late Monday, but another one is expected by tonight through Wednesday.

April snow is not unusual – Concord Airport averages 3 inches of snow in April – but this late flurry is ironic after a snowless winter. Concord had gotten just 27 inches of snow through the end of March, less than half our long-term average of 56 inches.

Most after-school and many evening public events were cancelled Monday, and as much as four inches of snow is expected before the current storm ends.

The storm hit heaviest in Massachusetts and weakened going north, with virtually none falling north of the White Mountains.
