ESPN reported on Sunday that the Denver Broncos are close to a deal for 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but that the teams still need to agree upon who will pay the quarterback’s salary for the upcoming season.

Kaepernick is due $11.9 million in guaranteed salary.

A source told ESPN that the 49ers don’t want to pay any of the salary should Kaepernick be traded, while the Broncos would like to pay $7 million with the 49ers picking up the rest.

Peyton Manning retired in the offseason and heir apparent Brock Osweiler left for Houston in free agency, leaving the Broncos with recently acquired Mark Sanchez at the quarterback position.
