Experience field work in archaeology

The annual archaeology field schools run by the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources will take place at a Native American site near Squam Lake in Holderness and the site of the 19th century Livermore Hollow community in Holderness and Campton. At the first site, research will focus on studying periods of occupation and on isolating activity areas. At Livermore Hollow work will center on identifying building foundations and determining areas with intact archaeological deposits. Although most SCRAP field school participants are volunteers, graduate and undergraduate credit through Plymouth State University is available. Volunteers receive the same instruction as credit students. There is no fee to participate as a volunteer, but a $40 donation is suggested. The Holderness sessions take place June 19 to July 1 and July 5 to 15 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays; Livermore Hollow is July 18 to 29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Advance registration is required; visit nh.gov/nhdhr/SCRAP.htm or call 271-6433.
