A 24-year-old Concord man was stopped by state police off Interstate 93 on Monday and found to have about 5 pounds of marijuana in his car, state police said.

Zachary Flieder and his passenger, 20-year-old Noah White of Penacook, were initially charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana while their Volvo was impounded on Route 49 in Campton, Trooper Sean McCarthy said in a phone interview Tuesday.

McCarthy said he developed probable cause to apply for a search warrant of the car, which resulted in more charges for Flieder.

Flieder, who was originally stopped for speeding, also faces felony charges of transporting marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

McCarthy declined to specify how fast the men were traveling or how he knew there was marijuana in the car. He said the items found during a court-ordered search โ€“ย including a scale and โ€œa lot of individually bagged amountsโ€ of marijuana โ€“ pointed to an intent to sell the controlled drug.

The estimated value of the marijuana was about $20,000, McCarthy said. There was also an unspecified amount of cash in the car. McCarthy said it wasnโ€™t enough to reach a threshold at which police could seize the cash, so it was returned to the men.

White and Flieder posted bail, according a press release issued by state police, and have a court date scheduled for June 16 at Plymouthโ€™s district court.
