It’s not every day you see high school students congregating around trash.
But on Earth Day, many Concord High School students paused in the front courtyard at “Mount Trashmore,” a pile of trashbags from Friday’s four lunch periods in the cafeteria.
They were collected by Enviro Corps, a group of students led by science teacher Donna Reardon. On Friday, Enviro Corps members asked their peers to guess how many bags were in the pile.
“A lot of them are guessing under,” said Enviro Corps president and senior Alaina Chormann.
She added that most students don’t recycle, since there’s only one bin in the cafeteria.
“It’s just a matter of convenience,” Chormann said.
But her group is trying to change that. Sophomore member Brenna McNamara headed up their Earth Day event, and Enviro Corps is working on a better recycling system as well as sharing information about sustainable practices.
“There’s a dire need to make an effort to improve the environment,” Chormann said. Starting that in high school, she added, “seems like a good base for students growing up in the culture we’re in.”
