GolfHoffman birdies final hole to win Texas Open

SAN ANTONIO – Charley Hoffman made a 9-foot birdie putt on the final to win the Valero Texas Open on Sunday.

The 39-year-old Hoffman closed with a 3-under 69 at TPC San Antonio for a one-stroke victory over Patrick Reed. Hoffman finished at 12-under 276 and earned $1,116,000 for his fourth PGA Tour victory.

Playing alongside Hoffman, Reed also birdied the par-5 18th for a 69. He missed birdie putts inside 8 feet on the par-3 16th and par-4 17th.

Chad Collins was third at 10 under after a 69.

GolfAustin, Allen win Legends of Golf

RIDGEDALE, Mo. – Woody Austin and Michael Allen won the PGA Tour Champions’ Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge on Sunday, giving Austin two straight victories and three in the last four events on the 50-and-over tour.

Austin and Allen birdied the final hole for a one-stroke victory over David Frost and Roger Chapman.

Austin and Allen closed with a 6-under 48, playing nine holes of modified alternate shot and nine of better ball on the par-3 Top of the Rock course. They finished at 23-under 156. Frost and Chapman also shot a 48.

GolfJapan’s Nomura wins Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic

DALY CITY, Calif. – Haru Nomura held on in strong wind to win the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic on Sunday for her second LPGA Tour victory of the year.

The 23-year-old Japanese player closed with a 1-over 73 in wind gusting to 35 mph at Lake Merced to finish at 9-under 279 and beat South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace by four strokes.

Nomura won the Australian Women’s Open in February, pulling away to beat top-ranked Lydia Ko by three strokes for her first LPGA Tour title.

Pace finished with a 74.

Ko shot a 75 on her 19th birthday to tie for sixth at 1 under. She won the tournament the previous two years.

IndyCarPagenaud overcomes contact to win at Barber Motorsports

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Simon Pagenaud led most of the way and overcame late contact with Graham Rahal to win at Barber Motorsports Park Sunday for his second straight IndyCar Series victory.

Pagenaud lost the lead briefly after contact with Rahal and was attempting to work past him outside on Turn 15. Rahal appeared to clip Jack Hawksworth, who was a lap down, and his left front wing fell onto the track. He managed to recover and hold off defending champion Josef Newgarden to finish second.

TennisNadal wins Barcelona Open, equals clay-court record

BARCELONA, Spain – Rafael Nadal beat defending champion Kei Nishikori, 6-4, 7-5, to win the Barcelona Open for the ninth time on Sunday, equaling Guillermo Vilas’s record of 49 career clay-court titles.

Nadal added this title to his trophy from Monte Carlo last week as the 14-time Grand Slam winner regains form on his favorite surface ahead of next month’s French Open.

Nishikori had won the tournament for the last two years after early exits by Nadal.

TennisKerber beats Siegemund to defend Porsche Grand Prix title

STUTTGART, Germany – Angelique Kerber defended her Porsche Grand Prix title with a comprehensive 6-4, 6-0 win over qualifier Laura Siegemund in Sunday’s final.

Siegemund made a great start and went 3-0 up in nine minutes, but Kerber recovered and converted three of her five break opportunities to take the first set in 39 minutes. The defending champion started the second set with a break and capitalized on a host of unforced errors from Siegemund to wrap up the match in 81 minutes with her first match point.

RunningKipchoge defends London Marathon title, sets course record

LONDON – Eliud Kipchoge defended his London Marathon title by running only eight seconds slower than the world record and setting a course record on a chilly morning Sunday

The 31-year-old Kenyan completed the 26.2-mile route in front of Buckingham Palace in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 5 seconds. The world record of 2:02:57 was set by Dennis Kimetto in 2014.

Stanley Biwott was 46 seconds behind Kipchoge, while Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia was third.

Jemima Sumgong won the women’s race for the first time after overcoming a fall with around four miles remaining.

The 31-year-old Kenyan won in 2:22:58, with defending champion Tigist Tufa of Ethiopia five seconds behind, and Florence Kiplagat third.

NHLKings’ Lecavalier to retire after 17-year career

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Vincent Lecavalier said he still plans to retire this summer, ending a 17-year NHL career after one last revitalizing season with the Los Angeles Kings.

Lecavalier confirmed his long-stated plans Sunday as the Kings left their training complex. Their season ended with a five-game loss to the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the postseason.

Lecavalier scored 949 points and won the Stanley Cup during a career that began with the Tampa Bay Lightning, who made him the No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft. He helped the Lightning to the 2004 title, and he won the Richard Trophy in 2007 as the NHL’s top goal-scorer.
