A front-page article in the April 22 Monitor discussed the plight of small farmers if they should have to meet state and national food regulations.
I have always defended regulations for food dispensed for large-scale production. I want to know what the big guys are putting in my food. We have had too much evidence of shortcuts and other poor practices at that level.
For me, there is no issue for the products of these local neighbors. Organic farmers in particular are better food producers; in fact, they are downright picky.
I do not question the food I buy at our farmers markets and farm stands. Perhaps those selling could make a small sign explaining the standards used in their products.
I did some growing for farmers markets back awhile, and I know I could not have afforded to meet the standards the grocery stores abide by.
Bully for these small farms. They provide local food for a food movement that is fast growing.
