Dennis Perreault’s “My Turn” (Monitor Forum, April 22) regarding the stalemate over President Obama’s Supreme Court justice nomination caused by the Senate’s refusal to give advice and consent as required by the U.S. Constitution leaves me questioning what responsible citizens are to do over this breach.
We have the ballot box. But, each U.S. senator is elected to a six-year term. Yes, New Hampshire may well vote out Sen. Ayotte this year for turning her back on her oath of office and leading the movement to do so. But, in many states, the long senatorial term insulates those who blatantly refuse their duty.
Our Constitution was built on compromise, and our system of government has worked until fairly recently. It is not working now. The executive branch, President Obama, has spoken as required in nominating Judge Merrick Garland. The legislative branch, the U.S. Senate, must respond “yea” or “nay.” Or, what?
