The Franklin softball players are finding out right now, just like you. The game they won on Tuesday, 12-0 against Belmont in six innings, it was the 300th win for their coach, Skip DuBois.
“I didn’t really tell anyone, the girls don’t even know, they’ll find out when they read it in the paper,” Dubois said. “The focus should be on them. They just won a big game and they played outstanding. I’m 67-years-old, I’ve received my due through the years. Mostly this is a personal thing.”
DuBois kept the low-key theme for his post-game celebration, “just sitting down with my wife, she brought me some Kentucky Friend Chicken, which I don’t get very often.” But the coach does deserve a little more recognition.
Dubois coached youth football, middle school basketball and junior varsity girls’ basketball at Franklin before taking over the softball team in 1997. He’s posted a remarkable 300-85 record over the last 20 years and he’s quick to credit everyone but himself.
“I’ve been blessed with wonderful kids and wonderful parents, I haven’t had a parent issue in many, many years. And I still have a great time with the kids,” DuBois said. “And I’ve had a great assistant who’s been with me for 19 years, Dave Therrien.”
The Golden Tornadoes have been to five championship games under DuBois. All those came in a five-year span (2006–2010) that saw Franklin win four titles (2007–10). He’s also sent more than a dozen players to play at the college level, the most recent example being Lexi Colpack, a freshman at Thomas College who leads the team in on-base percentage (.475) and stolen bases (10) and is second in average (.383) and slugging (.519).
“We’re as proud of that as we are of anything else,” DuBois said. “Apparently we influence their lives enough and instill enough enjoyment of the game that they want to go to the next level, and they’re good enough to play at the next level.”
This year’s Franklin team had to replace Colpack and three other key seniors, which also meant replacing three of their top four hitters. the new-look Tornadoes have been up to the challenge and are a perfect 7-0 after Tuesday’s win.
“We thought that we would be very competitive and we expected the shoes to be filled defensively but we didn’t expect the offensive power that we’ve received,” DuBois said. “We had 15 hits today. Now that’s not the norm, that’s the most we’ve had, but we’ve had a lot of girls with very little experience step in and do a remarkable job, so we’re tickled.”
Franklin opened the scoring in the top of the third when Hailey Haskins (two hits) led off the inning with a single and Anna Doherty (two hits) followed with a home run to centerfield. Hanne Nichols (two hits) then singled and came home on a triple from Breanna Styles (three hits) to make it 3-0.
That lead went to 5-0 in the fifth after a two-run single from Ryley Haskins. The Tornadoes broke it open in the sixth when Megan Johnston (two hits) led off with a single, Hailey Haskins had a two-run single, Styles had a two-run single and seven runs eventually crossed the plate.
Kaylee Marshe earned the pitching win, striking out 11 while allowing three hits and two walks.
“This is probably the most intense group of overachievers that I’ve had, and that’s how I view them,” DuBois said. “They’re all good athletes, but some of them are performing above and beyond. The nice thing is we’ll have a great game from a couple of them and the next game somebody else fills those shoes. And the team the camaraderie, and the support for each other, has been remarkable.”
