Too little worth reading

I was struck by Jack Harrod’s letter of April 26 about the lack of news in the Monitor.

Aside from an occasional piece about Franklin, I usually find the comics of most interest. In that vein, I am irritated by the space they command as compared to large photographs apparently inserted as filler.

My wife also reads the comics and skims the Sports section; she often complains about space given to scores. After subscribing to the Monitor for 43 years, I increasingly question its value.

A subscription renewal notice received today brings that concern into sharp focus. The annual price, $260, works out to about $0.71/day, but it’s not that simple. The final paragraph of the renewal notice recites that subscriptions include at least one “premium edition” that costs an additional $2. It will be collected by reducing the duration of less-than-premium deliveries. Each will reduce my subscription by three days? We may or may not renew but definitely not before knowing the terms.
