As a retired social worker, I am aware of the stresses facing people trying to balance work and family responsibilities. At the same time, I recognize a businesses’ need to consider the interests of the company when dealing with issues of staffing.

SB 416 on flexible work arrangements deals with this issue by encouraging communication between employee and manager and attempts to find solutions to work-family conflicts in ways that benefit both parties. SB 416 protects workers from retaliation for requesting flexible arrangements without in any way limiting the employer’s right to make decisions in light of the company’s needs.

This bill is an important step toward creating a more productive business environment and a family friendly workplace. It will encourage younger workers to stay in New Hampshire to raise their families as well as help older workers balance work and the need to care for their parents.

Contact your state representatives and urge them to support this important legislation.
