The challenge for a democracy, as I see it, is where to draw the line in the sand. The struggle is between the needs, wants, and rights of the individual and the needs, wants, and rights of the group.
One would think that “the line in the sand” would be a 50-50 proposition. However, there are bargains or trade-offs to be made. If the individual seeks to speak for or represent the group, then it is incumbent upon he or she to yield some of the personal wants. Namely if one wants to be a public persona then one yields individual history.
Thus, in the current political environment, Hillary must release her speeches and Donald must release his tax returns. The bottom line is if you can’t have it both ways.
If you want to be public, you must go public.
