MANCHESTER – The Crimson Tide should have been nervous, and there was some of that as the Concord girls’ tennis team began doubles play in Wednesday’s quarterfinal against Derryfield with the score all tied up. But the Tide had something in its back pocket to ease the nerves.

“We feel really confident in our doubles. We’ve done so much work on them and we’ve really improved on them, so we kind of use that as our secret weapon,” Concord’s Olivia Cattabriga said. “It was nerve wracking, but we were confident.”

The Tide’s secret weapon proved lethal as No. 5 Concord won at first and third doubles (and only lost in a tiebreaker at second doubles) to beat No. 4 Derryfield, 5-4.

“We were feeling good after singles because we practice enough doubles and we have enough tactics to use in doubles,” Tide Coach Greg Coache said.

Concord (12-3) will now face No. 1 Exeter (15-0) in the semifinals on Friday. The Tide beat Exeter in last year’s semifinals, 7-2, but after Concord lost three of the top six from that 2015 team, a return trip to the semifinals was never a sure thing.

“I think we did a lot better than people expected us to, so I’m pretty pumped,” Concord junior Alexandra Killinger said. “We thought we could do it, especially with our new exchange student, Irene (Escobar). Once we saw that we had her, we were pretty confident we could get this far.”

Escobar, who is from Spain, and Cattabriga were the first to show off Concord’s doubles skills with a quick 8-2 win over Emma Polgrean and Ada Hu at third doubles. The clinching game saw Cattabriga controlling the net and Escobar running things down on the baseline (and blasting a beautiful inside-out backhand into the far alley for a clean winner on match point), which is exactly how the duo has found success all season.

“Irene never played doubles before, but we just immediately clicked and we’ve been working on it a lot,” Cattabriga said. “We’ve been working on having her back and me at the net, so it’s clicked for us, we work well together. We’ve gotten used to each other and we can nail our doubles just like that.”

The match-clinching win came at first doubles, where Killinger and Becky Cistulli beat Olivia Husak and Abi Leonardi, 8-5. The pair from Derryfield (11-4) jumped to a quick 2-1 lead before the Tide reeled off four straight games. The Cougars answered with two games to make it 5-4 before Cistulli and Killinger won three of the last four for the deciding victory.

“I thought the one doubles started a little slow and then all of a sudden you could see them using the movement that we ask them to use,” Coache said, “and it was fantastic”.

It was a nice bounce back for Killinger, who lost a grueling singles match to Leonardi, 9-8 (7-5).

“I thought we owned the net in doubles like we usually do, and that’s how we won,” said Killinger, who added, “I’d always rather play doubles than singles.”

It’s easy to see why with a partner like Cistulli. The Concord junior has made major strides since last year, when she played at No. 3. The improvements were on full display in her 8-6 singles win over Husak, a talented player in her own right. Cistulli’s serve was on and earning her free points throughout the match, and when she found herself down, 4-3, she turned to her mental game, which has always been advanced.

“I was thinking about the score more than I was thinking about the point I was playing, like, ‘Oh, I just need to get two more games and then I’ll have a lead,’ stuff like that,” Cistulli said. “When I do that I play awful, it’s been a thing this season, so I just started to play the point out and stay patient and it worked.”

Cattabriga gave Concord its first singles point, beating Mary Quinn, 8-4, at No. 4. Cattabriga actually lost the first three games before settling down and steamrolling to the win.

“I wasn’t really in it at first,” Cattabriga said. “But after I got down three I just knew, okay, I can do this, and I talked to coach and that really helped. I just knew I had to be patient, and then I came back.”

Concord’s third singles point came at No. 3 as senior Colleen Casey played with her usual tenacity and endurance to beat Miranda Schilling, 8-6. Schilling is a tall, athletic player with powerful ground strokes, a big serve and an intimidating net game. But Casey handled all of that pressure to pull out what may have been the swing match for the Tide.

“Colleen’s win was huge, just huge,” Coache said. “Miranda has so much power and she is going to just keep getting better, but Colleen rode the storm today.”

Derryfield’s points came from Polgrean at No. 5 singles (8-3 win against Sabrina Hart-Meyer), Nancy Fortin at No. 6 (8-5 win against Escobar), Leonardi at No. 2 and the second doubles team of Schilling and Quinn, which claimed a 9-8 (7-4) win over Casey and Hart-Meyer.

When Concord meets Exeter on Friday, not only will it be a rematch of last year’s semifinals, it will also be a rematch of the season opener. Exeter won that one, 6-3, but the Tide likes its chances this time around.

“I remember at the beginning of the year we played them in that first match and I thought, ‘Oh, I’d like to play them again,’ ” Coache said. “So I’m going to take that thought and say that I know we can go down there and upset them. They’re very good, I’m not underplaying that at all, but we’re a very confident team right now.”
