Division II quarterfinals
No. 6 Coe-Brown (12-5) at No. 3 Goffstown (16-3), 3:30 p.m.
Head to head: The teams did not meet in the regular season.
Previous tournament games: Coe-Brown edged No. 11 Milford, 12-11. Goffstown blanked No. 14 Plymouth, 10-0.
Notes: It’s a battle of hot teams as the Bears are coming in having won four straight, while the Grizzlies are on a seven-game winning streak of their own. It’ll be interesting to see how the Bears will fare after an 11-inning affair in the first round that taxed the pitching staff. Both teams were semifinalists a year ago, but only one will enjoy a return trip this year.
No. 18 Hopkinton (10-9) at No. 7 Bishop Brady (11-6), 4 p.m.
Head to head: The Hawks beat Brady, 4-3, on May 4 and the Giants beat Hopkinton, 11-1, on May 11.
Previous tournament games: Hopkinton downed No. 15 Berlin, 3-1, and upset No. 2 Conant, 2-0. Brady beat No. 10 Kearsarge, 5-1.
Notes: In the first meeting between these two teams, Hopkinton’s Ben McManus earned the pitching win in bad weather after Josh Angell delivered a game-winning two-run single in the sixth. Brady got to McManus in the second game between the two (Max Lamora and Adam Kalil each had two hits for the Giants in that one), and Tom Blandini gave up just one run over six innings. And Blandini, Brady’s ace, is available to pitch on Saturday.
“Those games between us and Hopkinton are always tough,” Brady Coach Skip Foy said after his team’s first-round win against Kearsarge. “I’m expecting a tough game.”
Division III quarterfinalsNo. 6 Bow (12-5) at No. 3 Belmont (14-3), 4 p.m.
Head to head: The Falcons topped the Red Raiders, 3-0, on April 19.
Previous tournament games: Bow shut out No. 11 Winnisquam, 10-0. Belmont outlasted No. 14 Stevens, 11-7
Notes: The giant meets the giant killer. There’s no doubting Belmont’s place among the elite teams in Division III this year. The Red Raiders sport a productive lineup with big hitters throughout, few bigger than Caleb Drouin, who socked a grand slam to lead the charge as Belmont flexed its muscle and rallied past an upset-minded Stevens team late in the second round. Chris Marden, Doug Price and Cam Magerer are also tough outs for a lineup that doesn’t stay quiet long.
Don’t think Bow will be fazed, however. The Falcons already stymied the Belmont bats earlier in the year, and Bow also pulled off wins over Campbell and Conant – the top two seeds – during the season. Bow will likely send Brendan Winch, who tossed a complete-game shutout in that win over Belmont, to the mound today. Winch has been a big-game arm for the Falcons; if he quiets the Raiders again, Bow’s got a good chance. If it’s a slugfest, the odds favor a Belmont victory.
SOFTBALLDivision I quarterfinalsNo. 11 Concord (8-11) at No. 3 Spaulding (17-2), 4 p.m.
Head to head: Spaulding beat the Crimson Tide, 12-10, on May 27 in the regular-season finale.
Previous tournament games: Concord upset No. 6 Winnacunnet, 4-1. Spaulding beat No. 14 Merrimack, 10-0.
Notes: If the regular-season meeting between these two was any indication, this should be a wild game in Rochester. The Tide is coming off an inspired first-round win where Caitlyn Shea earned the win with a complete game, Izzy Dunn threw out a runner at the plate in the bottom of the seventh and Concord scored three in the top of the eighth for the extra-inning win.
Division II quarterfinalsNo. 6 Pembroke (12-6) at No. 2 Goffstown (17-2), 4:30 p.m.
Head to head: Goffstown beat the Spartans, 7-6, on April 15.
Previous tournament games: Pembroke beat No. 10 Merrimack Valley, 6-1. The Grizzlies hammered No. 15 Oyster River, 14-1.
Notes: The Spartans got a great two-way performance from shortstop Olivia Langevin and a complete-game pitching effort (with no earned runs) from Alexis Palmisano. After Pembroke lost to Goffstown in the regualr season, the Spartans went on a six-game wining streak that saw them play their best ball of the season.
“It was a very hard-fought game by both teams coming down to the final play in the bottom of the seventh,” PA Coach Ashley Gladu said after that game against the Grizzlies.
BOYS’ LACROSSEDivision I quarterfinalsNo. 9 Concord (8-9) at No. 1 Pinkerton (18-0), 5 p.m.
Head to head: The Astros beat Concord, 14-4, on May 16.
Previous tournament games: The Crimson Tide beat No. 8 Dover, 9-8, in overtime. Pinkerton had a first-round bye.
Notes: Goalie Ethan Donlon made 14 saves and the offense was balanced in Concord’s first-round win against Dover. Donlon finished with a whopping 22 saves in the Tide’s regular-season loss to Pinkerton. Concord will likely need a similar effort from its net minder to have any chance at the upset.
Division II quarterfinalsNo. 10 John Stark (8-7) at No. 2 Hollis-Brookline (13-3), 2:30 p.m.
Head to head: The two teams did not meet in the regualr season.
Previous tournament games: John Stark beat No. 7 Merrimack Valley, 6-5, in overtime. Hollis-Brookline had a first-round bye.
Notes: Steven Medvetz sent the Generals to the quarterfinals when he scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime against Merrimack Valley. Stark also got 14 saves from Giuseppe Brown in that first round. The Generals will need another effort like that from Brown against an H-B team that has scored 13 goals per game in its last six contests.
