Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan said Republican attacks about her time spent campaigning out of state are meant to distract from Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte’s record of standing with “far right” party leaders instead of New Hampshire voters.

Hassan’s remarks came Monday as she filed her official paperwork to run against Ayotte in one of the nation’s most heated U.S. Senate contests. Republicans are criticizing Hassan for spending all or part of more than 30 days out of state this year for campaign activities.

“These criticisms are really very hypocritical and just intended to distract,” Hassan said. She cited Ayotte’s opposition to holding hearings for President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, saying it’s Ayotte who’s not doing her job.

A spokeswoman for Ayotte said Hassan “has failed to live up to her promise to ‘focus each and every day’ on her job as governor.”

Hassan said she’s looking forward to a “spirited” campaign and promises to focus on college affordability, women’s health and the environment.

She is slamming Ayotte for backing Donald Trump as the GOP’s presumptive nominee.
