Anyone looking to cool off Sunday can get a little wet in the Winnipesaukee River Whitewater Slalom, which begins Sunday at 9 a.m.
Canoers and kayakers will hit the Winnipesaukee River during Tilton/Northfield Old Home Day weekend, and the race is being hosted by Sonny Hunt and his daughter, Amy. They’ve both run the Blackwater River slalom race in Webster for the past 30 years.
A slalom race times racers paddling through a series of “gates,” or polls hanging from wires strung above the river, that are both with and against the river’s current. Penalities are added for missing gates, and whoever finishes the course fastest wins the race.
Race headquarters will be located on the Northfield side of the Winnipesauke River, on conservation land at the end of Granite Street. Novices are encouraged to come out, and practice runs will be offered today.
