A day to remember

Many years ago, I graduated from Concord High – 43 to be exact. The only thing I can remember is how hot it was and my dad running up to me in the procession line just as I was about to go accept my diploma.

He handed me an envelope and kissed me. That is all I remember. I could not tell you who the guest speaker was or if we even had one.

Since that time I have been to many graduations, but never anything like Concord’s ceremony on June 18.

I was there to see my grandson Jacob graduate, and of course I was very proud and will remember it always. Unlike myself, I can guarantee that 43 years from now those kids will remember who their guest speaker was, their principal Gene Connolly.

Afflicted with ALS and now unable to speak for himself, he did so with the aid of an electronic device, which he named Tom. Though it was not his voice, it was his words and his beautiful trademark smile.

As each student went to receive their diploma, they would stop to touch him, fist bump, hug or kiss this kind and gentle man, who was beaming from ear to ear.

I am sure there are thousand of stories to tell about Gene and all the things he did during his 14 years. And though so many have come through those doors, no bigger or greater man than he.

God bless you, kind and gentle man.
