Seeking a better system

Your series on property taxes has helped to define the problem (Monitor front page, July 3-5). Unfortunately, there is no real news here.

Anyone paying attention to such matters can tell you that New Hampshire’s uneven and excessive property taxes are the unavoidable consequence of our state’s antiquated and regressive tax structure. It’s been this way seemingly forever.

Homeowners of limited means are under much duress to pay their property taxes in full and on time. So, what would it take to create a new system of taxation – one that is based on a person’s ability to pay? One that also eases the burden on property-poor towns and more nearly meets New Hampshire’s constitutional obligation to adequately fund public education.

The Monitor would provide an immense service to its readers by continuing the analysis and showing how more equitable, less regressive ways of taxation might be achieved.
