Construction on the Main Street project is in its final phase.
On Monday, construction will flip from the east side of South Main Street to the west side. Northbound traffic will be able to pass through the work zone, while southbound traffic will be rerouted to Storrs or South State streets.
โWeโre now in the home stretch of the project,โ project spokesman Brett St. Clair from Louis Karno & Co. said.
The crews will officially make the switch at 6 a.m.
โThere will be directional signs and flaggers out on Monday to help people get accustomed,โ St. Clair said.
By its completion this fall, the Main Street project will redesign and rebuild nine blocks of downtown. With underground utilities added to the bill, its total cost will be more than $13 million for construction, design and marketing. Work on North Main Street took place last year, and the job should be done on South Main Street by Nov. 11.
The last few months of work will follow the routines already in place.
Crews will work from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, they will leave early at 2 p.m.
Saturday work or odd hours will be occasional.
While the southbound lane will be closed, side streets and sidewalks will be open. Parking lots, like the one next to the Concord Food Cooperative, will be accessible.
Parking in the fresh spots on the east side of the work zone will be free for two hours.
โFolks can come down and park on that nice fresh black pavement with the fresh white stripes,โ St. Clair said.
While a last-minute decision to bury utility lines on the west side of the street has added to the to-do list, city officials have promised it will not delay the November deadline for completion. As of now, no work is scheduled for next spring.
โThose guys are going full tilt,โ St. Clair said.
