Politicizing safety

Rep. Katherine Rogers’s op-ed in the July 9 Monitor completely overlooked Kelly Ayotte’s bipartisan work on gun legislation.

After the Orlando shooting, Ayotte reached across the aisle because she understands that our safety is not a political game. She voted to move forward with bills sponsored by both her Republican and Democratic colleagues that would prevent individuals on the no-fly list from purchasing firearms.

This is common sense: There are people who aren’t allowed to fly on commercial airlines because of their suspected terrorist activity, and these people certainly should not be allowed to own guns. Rogers’s piece was the same old partisan rhetoric we are used to seeing from Washington politicians.

She politicized our national security, which is inexcusable and wrong. Meanwhile, Kelly Ayotte worked with both sides of the aisle to reach a solution that will help keep us safe in our communities.

I’m tired of politicians using issues as serious as our safety for their own political gain. I am proud that Kelly Ayotte stood up and fought for a solution.
