I am a coach with Concord Crew’s Summer Learn to Row program, and I’m writing with a simple request to all who boat on the Merrimack River with any regularity: Stay on the starboard (right) side of the river.
It’s a well-accepted practice that those using the waterways should stay on the starboard side. While you’re driving, you wouldn’t decide that you want to drive in the left lane just because it suits your fancy. The same goes for the river.
Numerous times we have had to stop our boats in order to let those using kayaks and paddleboards pass who are on the wrong side of the river. I understand that one does not need a boating license to operate these boats but, again, bicycles are not allowed to use any lane they want in whatever direction they want just because they are simpler than automobiles.
It is extremely difficult to teach kids how to row when we have to frequently stop practice in order to let people pass. So, I simply ask that, while you are on the river, be mindful of everyone else and stay to the right. We’ll do our part and keep our crews to starboard as well.
