An early morning crash in Belmont left a motorcyclist seriously injured.

Belmont police said they received a report at 5:04 a.m. Wednesday of a crash on Dutile Road. Officers found a 44-year-old unconscious man in the roadway with serious head injuries after crashing his motorcycle.

Police said the man was from Tilton, though they withheld his name pending notification of family .

The man was treated by the Belmont Fire Department at the scene before being transported to Lakes Region General Hospital. From there, he was immediately flown to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center by DHART helicopter due to his critical injuries.

The Belknap Regional Accident Investigation Team investigated the crash and determined the man hadnโ€™t been wearing a helmet. Excessive speed and alcohol have been ruled out as factors, and officers are looking into whether an animal ran into the path of the motorcycle.
