Having reread the final paragraph in Sunday’s article, “On the trail, Stein peddles fairy tales” several times, I remain perplexed (Sunday Monitor Forum, Aug. 28).
Is the unidentified Washington Post author positing that climate change is not a global emergency?
Stein is exactly right in her analysis of climate change, as catastrophic weather events around the world are amplified by warming oceans, rising levels of water vapor and changing jet streams. She is correct that Trump has stated that climate change is “a hoax invented by the Chinese.” She is also correct in her views, that whereas Clinton will act on climate change, continuing with the “all of the above” energy policies of Obama will still take us over the cliff, although more slowly than with Trump.
Obama had yet another golden opportunity to speak on climate change when he toured flood-ravaged Louisiana. Not only did he fail to do so, but the next day he allowed the Department of the Interior to proceed with a lease sale of up to 24 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico for oil and gas exploration and development.
Whereas Stein is right, it is also true that with the current two-party system, she is both unelectable and a spoiler. In order to preserve a habitable planet, our goal must be to push the next president to adopt Jill Stein’s knowledge-based climate reality, and for the president to act accordingly 100 percent of the time.
