Nearly a week after several stolen orange flamingos were found on the side of Colby Road in Weare, police have received an anonymous letter of apology.

The plastic flamingos have been gathering on lawns and in front of local businesses for the last few weeks, showing support for a young Weare girl who was recently diagnosed with leukemia.

But not everybody in town knew what the flamingos stood for, as several suddenly began to disappear. On Aug. 26, a trash bag with 15 flamingos was found on the side of Colby Road, one of the neighborhoods that had all of its flamingos stolen.

The letterโ€™s authors wrote โ€œWe are truly sorry for our actions and had no idea what the flamingos on Colby Road symbolized. We never would have taken them.โ€

The writers claim to only have taken the flamingos on Colby Road, the same ones that were later found on the side of the road.

Enclosed with the letter was a $50 donation for the girl, 12-year-old Abby VanDyke, and her family. The authors wrote they โ€œwill never do anything like this again,โ€ before closing the letter with #AbbyStrong.

There are still many stolen flamingos that have not been returned. Police ask anyone with information to contact Lt. Frank Hebert at 529-7755.
