I spent the day with my almost 3-year-old grandson, who looks at me with those beautiful brown eyes, and I melt.
He does not know that I witnessed the Vietnam War as a college student, and son of a senior naval officer.
He does not know about Iraq, Afghanistan, 9/11, Korea, Russia, Syria, ISIS and all the others that we live with every day. He knows Grammy and Papa, unconditional love, and a simple life of security. I am appalled that we, as a โfreeโ society, cannot guarantee him the same luxury that I had as a child and adult; some kind of future that screams fairness, reason, negotiation, moving forward, acceptance and openess.
I recognize I had my own uncertainty and concerns, but this is much worse. For those of you who still curse Ted Kennedy, I remind you that he was very willing to negotiate his โliberalโ views. He understood that the middle ground is in the best interest of the future of this country and my grandson. Bend, and you will be better off in the long run. The alternative is not pretty.
