The local branch of the Community Action Program is trying to round up 100 new winter coats for needy kids.

Andy Labrie, a homeless-outreach worker for CAP of Merrimack and Belknap counties, said he hopes to fill a need for low-income families at a time when heating bills are beginning to put added stress on budgets.

He’s asking for donations of new or lightly used coats or money to buy them.

At the beginning of the school year, Labrie said, his group donated 150 backpacks filled with school supplies to students enrolled in Head Start and the state’s Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program.

Now, he’s working to get jackets for the children of families who use the Concord Homeless Resource Center, the Friendly Kitchen and those education organizations.

“Every kid deserves a new winter coat,” he said.

Donors can call Labrie at 225-6880. He’s hoping to collect the coats by the end of the month.
