Do not despair

Dear Ms. Ruoff (Monitor letters, Nov. 10), do not despair, democracy is difficult to overthrow once it has become firmly established.

Change in a society is never linear, it follows a spiral course and political change is no exception. Our “checks and balances” may not be what they once were, but they are still intact. No Congress, however well populated by one party, can grant a president unlimited authority, and this president will be no exception.

Take heart, Ms. Ruoff, and remember that democracy thrives through our everyday actions, and withers and dies only when we surrender to defeat and do nothing.
