Leaders of the ’90s swing revival, Squirrel Nut Zippers will share its vintage-sounding hot jazz and swing Friday in Plymouth.
The North Carolina band of siblings have revived their group for their 20th anniversary “Hot” tour.
Their hit song “Hell” and single “Put a Lid On It,” was unique on MTV in the early 1990s when they first formed.
The sound is a throwback to the jazz and swing sounds of the 1920s and ’30s. The group dresses the part, too.
“The anniversary was the impetus, and I decided I wanted to put a Zippers together again that could be around for a while and really showcase the repertoire,” said lead performer Jimbo Mathus. “The people I’m working with now have got me fired up. I’m not trying to re-create something. I’m trying to create a new chapter. And I want to have a fun, multi-generational experience in the concerts.”
The Zippers are joined by vocalist Ingrid Lucia of the Flying Neutrinos and a group of New Orleans players.
“I want to reinvigorate the fans and show them one thing: The Zippers are back in town!” Mathus said, stressing that it’s a revival, not a reunion, and hoping to continue the group.
The show will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Flying Monkey Performance Center in Plymouth. Tickets are $35 or $45 for premiere seating. To reserve, visit flyingmonkeynh.com or call 536-2551.
