Eversource should think locally

I keep getting Northern Pass Project promotional mailings, emails, Facebook ads, etc. These ads promise jobs, controlled electric rates, an improved economy. They are sponsoring all kinds of programs in the name of Northern Pass.

I propose that we abandon the NPP and concentrate on U.S. energy – more specifically, N.H. energy. Consider: New Hampshire currently has more than 1,000 dams holding water. If 25 percent of these dams are capable of generating electricity, we can produce more, longer-lasting jobs, we can produce electricity that we will use – as opposed to New Hampshire being a conduit to Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. We will keep U.S. dollars in the U.S., as opposed to sending dollars to a foreign country.

Using N.H. dams will require boosting the infrastructure, rebuilding/retrofitting dams, ongoing dam and water monitoring, and maintenance – all of which will provide longer-lasting jobs than the NPP will. It will provide green energy in N.H. for N.H. residents and might also benefit the aforementioned other states.

Eversource’s representatives tell me that it’s too expensive. I suspect that means there’s a longer wait before they start realizing the enormous profit they anticipate. Look at how much money they’re spending to promote the NPP – millions, when you consider all the school programs and apprenticeships they’ve sponsored.

Contact Eversource and ask them to think more locally.
