Gambia’s ruling party has called for fresh elections after President Yahya Jammeh disavowed the vote that would see him step out of power after 22 years.
The petition, signed by a notary public and the secretary-general of Jammeh’s party Tuesday, demands a new vote with revalidated voter registry. The document seen by the Associated Press is filed against the Independent Electoral Commission and Gambia’s attorney general citing irregularities including different results given Dec. 2 and Dec. 5.
It said the vote was not conducted fairly or in good faith, and thus should be invalidated.
Jammeh initially conceded to president-elect Adama Barrow, calling the election fair, but on Friday rejected results, calling for a new vote.
The deadline for submitting a challenge was Tuesday. There is no sitting Supreme Court.
