A Connecticut man is being investigated after police say he could not explain what caused him to sideswipe a state trooper’s vehicle.

The trooper’s cruiser was parked in the breakdown lane of Interstate 89 South in Hopkinton at 8:31 a.m. Friday morning after conducting a traffic stop when it was sideswiped by a 2003 Saab 93 convertible. The trooper, who has not been identified, was standing outside the cruiser at the time of the incident and escaped injury, according to a press release.

The vehicle’s operator, George Anthony Day-Reiss, 21, of Salisbury, Conn., admitted to driving between 75 to 80 miles per hour in the posted 65 mph zone, but could not explain what caused him to strike the cruiser, which was parked to the right of the fog lane with emergency lights on.

A search warrant is being sought to obtain Day-Reiss’ cell phone record as part of the investigation, but he is otherwise not facing any charges at this time. Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene, according to the press release. No one was injured.
