The Gilford Rotary Club will bring the Caribbean to the Lakes Region with a special “parrothead” event at the Gilford Youth Center on April 1 from 5:30 to 11 p.m. “An Evening in Paradise” will feature a Caribbean-style buffet and desserts, special island drinks, a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and dancing to the tunes of the Island Castaways band. It will be sponsored by All Metals Industries, Watts Water Technologies, Fireside Inn and Suites, Gilford Home Center, Lake Region Dental Care, the Laconia Daily Sun, 98.3 WLNH and 107.3 FM WEMJ. Eco-Schools USA in New Hampshire is a free program serving public, charter and private schools that provides a roadmap to sustainability through resources, guidance and recognition. Students engage in active citizenship, build critical thinking abilities, strengthen skills in math and science and acquire a sound environmental ethic. Action Grant funds are now available to registered Eco-Schools. These grants are designed to assist a school in implementing the Eco-Schools program. The deadline for nominations for the Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Manager of the Year award is coming up. The nominee must be a person who has worked at least two years as a manager (paid or unpaid) of a volunteer program, is directly responsible for development and management of a volunteer program at the local or state level, and demonstrates excellence in program management. WinnAero, the ACE Academies, is preparing for the upcoming summer with its STEM-oriented camps for youth interested in aviation and aerospace. The camps are run as part of the non-profit WinnAero’s mission to support and teach science, technology, engineering and math to youth. This summer students from elementary to high school can learn how STEM applies to flying and space exploration. The day camps are conducted at the Laconia Airport but include a number of field trips.
