Fab Melo, the 7-footer drafted by the Celtics in the first round in 2012, is reportedly dead at age 26, according to Adam Zagoria of the New York Times. Zagoria reported Saturday night that Melo died in his home country of Brazil but the cause was not yet known.
Melo, who played college basketball at Syracuse, was born in Brazil in 1990. He averaged 4.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game for the Orange, while shooting 57.6 percent from the field in 63 games.
“He was a really good kid, and it’s not fair that he will be defined by one thing, a 10-page paper,” Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim said, according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman. “He worked his tail off to become a really good player, and was a nice kid. We don’t know the cause yet. It’s so hard right now, so hard to believe. It’s a sad, sad day.”
A 10-page paper written by Melo was reportedly the centerpiece of the NCAA’s investigation surrounding Syracuse in recent years.
Melo played for six games for the Celtics during the 2012-13 season after he was picked 22nd overall.
