A proposed fee on fuel-efficiency vehicles is in limbo after the Republican-led House voted to table the bill Wednesday.
The road usage fee would apply to cars that get at least 22 mpg and start at $7.70 a year. The charge was proposed as a way to supplement the state’s gas tax, which has dropped roughly $15 million years in the last decade with the rise of fuel efficiency vehicles.
With no discussion, the House laid the bill on the table in a voice vote. Republican House Majority Leader Richard Hinch later said the proposal needs more work.
A similar fee tanked last year after concerns that it would dissuade people from buying hybrid and electric vehicles.
