GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

DIVISION III QUARTERFINALS

No. 9 Gilford (11-7) at No. 1 Newfound (19-0)

HEAD TO HEAD: Newfound won at Gilford, 47-44, on Dec. 6 in the second game of the year.

PREVIOUS TOURNAMENT GAMES: Newfound beat No. 16 Stevens, 56-33. Gilford won at No. 8 Berlin, 55-35.

NOTES: Gilford had to rebuild after last year’s championship run, but the Golden Eagles seem to have found their stride at the right time. They won six straight to close the regular season and then posted an impressive 20-point win after taking the long bus ride to Berlin in the first round. The defending champs are allowing just 27.7 points per game during their current winning streak. Newfound’s three-point win at Gilford in December was the closest game of the season for the undefeated Bears. Ashley Dukette led Newfound all season long and she was at again in the first round win agaisnt Stevens, finishing with 32 points and 19 rebounds.

No. 6 Kearsarge (15-4) at No. 3 Monadnock (17-2)

HEAD TO HEAD: The Cougars lost at Monadnock, 46-31, on Feb. 3.

PREVIOUS TOURNAMENT GAMES: Kearsarge beat No. 11 Belmont, 57-47. The Huskies knocked off No. 14 Newport, 44-31.

NOTES: When these teams met on Feb. 3, Kearsarge struggled against Monadnock’s pressure defense and faced a double-digit deficit at halftime. It may not get any easier today as the Cougars could be without their point guard, freshman standout Madisyn Brayshaw, who missed Thursday’s first-round win against Belmont. Kearsarge trailed early against Belmont, but Maicy Hansen, Meg Roy and Caitlin Prescott sparked the Cougars to a big second quarter, and senior leader Devi Kraushaar finished with a team-high 13 points.
