That wasn’t the case in the Hurricanes’ home-opener at the Maxfield Sports Complex on Monday as Allard, in his second start of the season, racked up 13 strikeouts and allowed only one hit on 82 pitches over seven innings to help Hartford to a 4-0 victory over U-32.
“It’s kind of fun to watch him pitch,” Grassi said. “I was most impressed by the way he managed his arm. In the past, he’s only been throwing two or three innings; he can go out and throw as hard as he can. Today, he wasn’t trying to throw through a wall.”
Tyer Hamilton, Kyle Hamilton and Hunter Perkins were a combined 9-for-10 at the plate for the Hurricanes; Kyle Hamilton had two singles, a double and three RBIs. Hartford scored three runs on back-to-back hits with two outs in the first inning and added an insurance run in the fifth. But the Canes also stranded 10 runners on base.
“I would say that about half of them were in scoring position,” Grassi said.
