I can’t help but be a little amused by the stereotype of Democrats painted by Jim Mayotte in his letter to the editor (July 4). Partisans like Mayotte seem to swing between two images. The first image is that we are people who hate the rich, prosperous, affluent successful people around us. The second is that we’re a bunch of rich, latte drinking, SUV driving prosperous rich people who look down on the working class and are condescending towards people of more modest means. Well, which is it? We can’t be both at the same time or perhaps neither stereotype fits who we are.

Here’s what I would recommend to someone like Jim Mayotte. First, get your head out of right wing web sites, news sites, or talk radio and go out and meet and talk to some real Democrats. You’ll find them in your community among your neighbors.

What you’ll find is people who care about the environment, healthcare for all, supporting education, civil rights, affordable college, people making a living wage, regulating predatory and reckless financial transactions, restoring civility to our government, and a whole host of issues that are aimed at building a just and fair society.

Many of us are successful financially while others struggle but we have one thing in common. We deeply care about all people in this country and want everyone to have the opportunity to grow and prosper. If you need a stereotype, try this one: Democrats are people who care.
