BowJ.R.R. Tolkien series program at library

The Baker Free Library has received a grant from N.H. Humanities to present the program J.R.R. Tolkien and the Uses of Fantasy. J.R.R. Tolkien and the Uses of Fantasy will be presented on Aug. 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Baker Free Library. Fantasy literature is enjoying a new surge of interest sparked by the popularity of the Harry Potter series and the film version of The Lord of the Rings. While fantasy has always made for popular reading or listening, what accounts for its special appeal? Clia Goodwin explains how Tolkien’s world has a mythic structure that reveals much about the human condition. This program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. ConcordGet a free back-to-school haircut

Hair Cuttery at 273 Loudon Road in Concord will donate back-to-school haircuts to children in need this summer through its annual Share-A-Haircut program. Until Aug. 15, for every child up to age 18 who purchases a haircut at Hair Cuttery, a free haircut certificate will be donated to a disadvantaged child in the community. “It is important for every child to begin the new school year with a sense of confidence and excitement,” said Dennis Ratner, founder and CEO of Hair Cuttery. “While a back-to-school haircut may seem like a basic necessity to most, for some it’s a luxury. The Share-A-Haircut program ensures that children, regardless of their financial circumstances, will look and feel good about themselves as they get ready to start the new school year.” Within the first two weeks of August, Hair Cuttery aims to donate tens of thousands of free haircut certificates ahead of the new school year. Certificates will be distributed with the help of more than 100 local government and nonprofit organizations.
