The United States is no longer that city upon a hill, whose beacon of democracy gave hope to millions. In our current political crisis, our elected political leaders have forgotten that broader hope. They have a narrow vision where political partisanship is more important than political compromise that has been the bedrock of our democracy.
The 2016 election demonstrated how a smooth-talking salesman peddling one-line simple solutions to our nation’s complex problems could capture the imagination of many.
The Republican Party now controls the government but cannot pass any laws. It has lost its wider vision for America. The Congress is now hostage to the self-destructive policies of President Donald Trump, who has no vision for America other than to erase all memory of President Barack Obama.
The Republicans now cower at receiving a harsh tweet from President Trump should they find their political backbone and pass laws that will benefit all Americans and not just a few.
Who will speak for America’s mission now? That is the question.
We no longer stand proudly upon that high hill but in a damp swamp of partisan mediocrity.
Wake up, America.
