With precision and patience, Freeland Hubbard and Curtis Marden placed the last few stones in the makeshift sculpture garden they were creating last week as a gust of wind knocked down half their work. “It’s a great lesson in transience,” Hubbard said standing outside his downtown Concord home, stacks of stones balanced in the flower bed. He said he picked up rock balancing a few years ago as a nonreligious meditative practice, but he only recently started arranging the stones in front of his home. For the spring, he’s thinking about adding sand and a small rake in true Zen garden fashion.
