Rep. James McConnell (Monitor Forum, Dec. 21) does a real nice job summarizing the GOP talking points about how great the tax reform could be for the U.S., when the only objective data thus far would indicate it is a massive giveaway to the wealthiest Americans through individual rate decreases and corporate windfalls. Everything else is pure conjecture.
Readers should note that every declarative statement made by McConnell as to what the law will give New Hampshire (and America in general) is preceded by qualifiers like “if,” “could” or “should.”
There is plenty of historical evidence that shows that “trickle down” effects of past tax cuts never materialized, except as windfalls for the direct beneficiaries of the actual cuts. No one has provided any convincing evidence that this attempt will be different.
Let’s revisit this issue one year from now. The proof will be in the pudding, with the GOP majority in Congress being held accountable, one way or the other.
