So Dave Scanlon, deputy secretary of state, wants to make sure college students won’t be voting in New Hampshire, even though they live here for eight or nine months. Scanlon is fine, of course, with retired New Hampshire snowbirds leaving the state for half the year, then driving back to New Hampshire for the summer with Florida plates.
Scanlon’s reasoning is straightforward. College students tend to vote Democratic. Retired folks tend to vote Republican.
If he were honest, Scanlon would tell these college students to go home to Massachusetts and New York after they graduate, and stay there. New Hampshire doesn’t need any more highly educated young people coming here, voting for Democrats. Let’s keep the state old, white and Republican.
As Donald Trump said, and Scanlon seems to agree: “I love the poorly educated.”
