I trust the Monitor to be a leader in our state for comprehensive and informative reporting on the State House. So I was very surprised to see the Monitor re-publish a partisan and misleading Republican flier directed at our bipartisan and successful state Sen. Dan Feltes, in its recent piece on SB 587.
The composition of the story wrongly suggests that Dan is trying to raise car registration rates. SB 587 is about who should decide car registration fees: state or local government. Dan supports local control, including on car registration fees. But Dan opposes having the City of Concord increase our car registration fees.
The flier, which appeared at the top of the Monitor’s piece, tells a misleading story. I’m confused about why the Monitor would give so much space to republishing partisan propaganda then fail to provide an effective analysis of why the propaganda was false. Now more than ever, we need to be able to have faith in our trusted media institutions to tell us the real story behind political spin and falsehoods. Unfortunately, this time around, the big story here is that the Monitor fell down on its job. I look forward to seeing the Monitor return to its usual standards of trustworthy coverage.
