The Concord Capitols secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming New England Independent Baseball League State Tournament with a 5-3 win in extra innings over Weare. Pat Goren pitched no-hit ball for 5⅓ innings before a couple of defensive miscues led to three unearned runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. Mario Fusco got the win in relief, striking out seven in 2⅔ innings. Trevor Gallagher had three hits and drove in Dylan Cooper with a sacrifice fly for the game winning run in the top of the eighth. Cooper also added two hits.

Golf results

Rob Simpson and Gary LaPierre won the Dave Banks Presidents Member-Guest tournament at the Concord Country Club. Simpson and LaPierre won a shootout with seven other divisional winners. Simpson and LaPierre prevailed in the sixth round of the shootout, getting by the last surviving team of Al Lindquist and Todd Torrance. Other divisional winners were Kevin Hobbs and Bill LaBerge, Don Steenbeke and Derek Gordon, Kraig Burnham and Keith Burnham, John Sokul and Mark Kanakis, Bill Ennis and John Salerno, and Greg Carbone and Nick Estee.

Merrimack Valley High School fall sports start on Aug. 13 at 8:30 a.m. except for football and spirit.
