Despite six of nine starters recording a hit, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats couldnโt protect an early lead in falling to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 5-2, Saturday in Richmond, Va. New Hampshire struck first with a run in the fourth, but went on to allow two in the sixth, two in the seventh and a final tally in the eighth inning. Max Pentecost finished with one RBI for the Fisher Cats. New Hampshire takes on Richmond for the rubber match of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Cap City Fall Basketball tryouts will be on Sunday, Tuesday (grades pre-K through sixth), Wednesday (grades 7-12), Saturday and Aug. 26 at Bishop Brady High School for boys and girls of all abilities between pre-kindergarten and 12th grade. Merrimack Valley High School fall sports start on Monday at 8:30 a.m. except for football and spirit. Fall spirit tryouts will be on Aug. 20 from 8-10 a.m. at Penacook Elementary School. Athletes starting on Monday will meet on their respective game field in the stands. All athletes must have a physical on file (given after Jan. 1 of athletesโ eighth-grade year) and current ImPact test (must recertify every two years). Physicals and ImPact tests are required prior to trying out. Interscholastic Athletic Agreement forms must be signed by the student-athletes and returned on Tuesday.
Franklin High School fall sports begin on Monday. Football practice will be from 4-6:30 p.m. at FHS, field hockey will be from 5-7 p.m. at PSS and soccer will be at FMS from 5-7 p.m. Volleyball starts on Wednesday at FMS from 9-11 a.m. and spirit will meet at FHS from 4:15-6 p.m. All athletes must be registered on FamilyID in order to participate. On Thursday there will be a mandatory meeting with parents, players and coaches in the FHS Cafeteria from 6-7 p.m.

NFL Flag Football is being offered by Concord Parks and Recreation. It is a league for boys and girls, ages 6-11. The league provides boys and girls the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of football while playing in a safe environment. The league runs Sundays from Sept. 9-Oct. 21.
