The New Hampshire Veterans Home will present two fun and informative public programs in October, thanks to grants from N.H. Humanities. On Oct. 18, Adam Boyce, a 10th-generation Vermonter and lifelong student of history, will offer his program “Old Time Rules Will Prevail: The Fiddle Contest in New Hampshire and New England,” about the rise, evolution and recent decline of traditional fiddling contests around New England. On Oct. 26, Jeremy D’Entremont will present “New England Lighthouses and the People Who Kept Them,” tales of the history of New England’s historic and picturesque lighthouses primarily focusing on the colorful and dramatic stories of lighthouse keepers and their families. D’Entremont is the author of more than a dozen books and 300 articles on lighthouse history and other maritime topics. Both presentations start at 2 p.m. in the New Hampshire Veterans Home’s Town Hall and are free and open to the public. Contact Len Stuart at 527-4425. For directions, please visit nh.gov/veterans.
The Concord High School band is participating in the Salem Band Show again this year. The show is Oct. 6 at Salem High School. There are bands from many state high schools – so many young people doing something wonderful.
Terrapin Tours recently awarded $1,250 in scholarships to three New Hampshire students to put towards their school sponsored or education-based travel opportunities. The scholarship fund which is part of Terrapin’s “Give Back Initiative” announced earlier this year, is available to New Hampshire High School students with the goal of the helping students experience cultural, educational, and personal growth through travel. Terrapin Tours is proud to provide support to this year’s scholarship recipients as they travel to Costa Rica, Spain, France, and Ireland. Scholarship recipients include Mary Rogers of Winnisquam Regional High School; Lily Sabol from Hopkinton High School; and Kamryn Compton, who will be attending the University of New England in the fall. All of these hard-working students demonstrated strong commitments to furthering their education through their travel opportunities, and deepening their knowledge and understanding of other cultures. While all funds have been awarded for this year, Terrapin Tours looks forward to continuing their scholarship program and will begin accepting applications again in 2019.
