Police in Belmont say a Laconia man arrested on a DWI charge was later found trying to flush drugs down a toilet at the station on Wednesday.

Ryan Streitenberger, 37, asked to use the bathroom while being booked at the Belmont Police Department after midnight Wednesday. After a few minutes, police “became suspicious” and found Streitenberger flushing “what is believed to be drugs he had hidden in his body cavity into the toilet.”

Police say they found a small plastic bag with a brown powder substance in the toilet. A field test later revealed the substance contained narcotic drugs, police said.

Streitenberger was charged with possession of narcotics and falsifying physical evidence. Both charges are felonies. He was on probation from the state prison. Police contacted his probation officer who ordered his immediate detention based on the DWI arrest.
